Chemical whitening changes the color of the tooth itself and requires peroxide. In the European Union, preparations containing or releasing between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide can only be sold to dentists. The first use in each cycle is performed by a dentist (or under their direct supervision) after an oral examination — the rest of the treatment, e.g., tray-based, can be continued at home. A check-up at the dentist allows for the early detection of cavities or leaking fillings, where whitening could cause pain and irritation.
Post-treatment care is your daily routine. This is where the toothpaste comes in: it removes fresh plaque before it can set, and fluoride strengthens the enamel. The toothpaste will not replace the treatment, but it helps maintain its effect for longer.
